Over The River: By A Steamer

By Benzir Shaon

The people whose native district is in the south part of Bangladesh , steamer journey may be very common to them. Especially for the people who belong to Barishal division. I got an opportunity to go one of the districts of Barishal division, this year (though once I went Barishal in my childhood, but it was by bus).

One of my uncle’s home districts is in Bhola. He has wanted to take me there for years but as I am a university student and attending classes regularly is mandatory I couldn’t leave Dhaka . Fortunately I managed to go a few months back during the semester vacation.

We started from Shaderghat Launch Terminal in Dhaka . I was accompanied by my uncle and he arranged a first class cabin. We started with a hired cabin of one of the largest steamer in Dhaka-Bhola route named M. V. Balia. On the same day, in same steamer the owner of the steamer and former minister Mr. Anwar Hussein Monju was going to Bhola, which was much surprising.

We started about 8.00 pm and the story of my first steamer journey began. The cabin was a VIP cabin. There were two beds with a TV. I visited the different parts of the steamer: the engine room, the deck, the front side, the big roof, guards rooms. We had our dinners with good dishes. We passed the whole night hearing the roar of tide in the river.

We reached very early in the morning. We left it at about 7.30 am. The first steamer journey ended.
